Thread reader apps for X, and what replaced them
Unrolling a thread solves the next five minutes. It does nothing about the two hundred threads already sitting in your bookmarks.
What is a thread reader app?
A thread reader takes a thread — a chain of posts by one author replying to themselves — and stitches it into a single scrollable page. Classic ones work by mention: you reply to the thread asking the bot to unroll it, and it answers with a link to a page containing every post in order, without the interface around it.
Why do thread readers keep breaking?
Unrolling depends on read access to the whole conversation. Since X tightened its API pricing and locked more of the timeline behind sign-in, free bots hit rate limits, miss replies, and sometimes return partial threads. Protected accounts, deleted posts and quote-chains all break the chain too, so an unroll is best treated as a snapshot rather than a reliable archive.
Does unrolling a thread save it?
No. An unrolled page is a rendering of the thread at the moment you asked for it, hosted somewhere else. If you never send yourself the link, you have not saved anything. Most people end up bookmarking the original post instead, which saves only the first post — the hook — and none of the argument.
What is the difference between a thread reader and a bookmark tool?
A thread reader solves reading one thread right now. A bookmark tool solves finding things you saved earlier. Neither solves the actual problem most heavy X users have, which is a saved list of hundreds of threads and no moment in the week set aside to read them.
How do you read a thread later without an unroll link?
Bookmark the post as normal, then use something that expands the thread for you when it is time to read. Rewind does this: when you bookmark any post in a thread, it pulls the whole conversation, summarises it as one piece rather than post by post, and links back to the original if you want the full version.
Is there a thread reader that emails threads to me?
That is essentially what Rewind is, applied to everything you save rather than one thread at a time. Every Sunday it emails the posts and threads you bookmarked in the last seven days, each with a short summary that keeps the specifics, grouped by topic. There is no bot to mention and no page to visit.
Threads that arrive already read
Rewind expands every thread you bookmark, condenses it into a few sentences that keep the numbers and the conclusion, and emails the week's set to you on Sunday with a link to each original.
